Short Description

The CARTA package provides a web browser based interface for exploring images (including cubes).  The objective is integration with the NRAO archive system to allow the display, integration, and selection of regions prior to download.

Interaction

  • Expectation is that archive would open CARTA in a new browser tab to load images for interactive viewing
  • should have normal CARTA interface modulo restricted functionality for the remote version
  • Unclear right now if we should use a slimmed down CARTA in the archive window for previewing or just have cached jpg/png


Requirements

Must have


  • Seamlessly be able to show VLA or ALMA images, location of images should be transparent to users
    • May require backend servers in CV to view ALMA and backend servers in NM to view VLA/VLASS images
    • VLA and ALMA images should be able to be opened/overlayed in a single session
  • Simply method of having the full image associated with a preview  from archive-new open in a CARTA session on the users browser.
  • Plot a spectrum for specific pixel, and/or region (or source mask included in ancillary archive files) and download to user's computer as graphic and text file
  • Overlay line lists and shift to particular system velocity/redshift
  • Ability to define regions in spatial coordinates and frequency(velocity) that can be fed back to functional archive interface to enable image cutouts
  • Open and overlay user specified (uploaded or linked) file
  • Save and download jpg/png/pdf/eps of current view to user's computer

Should have


  • Simple method of opening additional images of same field in the same CARTA session and ability to overlay contours of continuum, mom0/8, and/or cube
  • Gaussian fitting in spatial and spectral domain
  • Ability to generate moment maps and download to user's computer
  • Ability to produce position-velocity diagrams and download to user's computer
  • Overlay archival spectral from major surveys (e.g., Orion KL) and shift to source velocity (SMA correlator config has this capability)

Could have

  • Plot a catalog of source positions (from archived catalog, user uploaded, and support variety of online catalogs).
  • Similar features exist in ds9 to fetch catalogs like 2MASS, NVSS, FIRST, IRAS, this ability would be good.
  • Ability to fetch archival images from other observatories/missions
    • e.g., ROSAT, XMM, 2MASS, DSS, SDSS, MSX, Spitzer, Herschel, similar feature exists currently in ds9
  • Ability to save a particular state of CARTA and access later with a link that can also be shared with colleagues
  • Have other images from the archive of the same region suggested for overlay and display
  • Save datacube animation as animated gif or other movie format to luser's computer

Will not have

  • Crashes
